山中一毅

サックス奏者 / 作編曲家 / 音楽教育家

さいたま市生まれ。14歳でサックスを始め、大学在学中にジャズに傾倒する。23歳の時にジャズミュージシャンとしての道を志す。リーダーとしてこれまでに、3枚のスタジオアルバムと1枚のライブBlu-rayアルバムをリリース。ジャズの伝統に根差しながらも、即興とオリジナリティを大切にした、独自の世界観を追求している。

全曲オリジナルで構成された最新作『Humanity』（2026年）は、イギリスの注目レーベル Whirlwind Recordings より、まもなくリリースされる。数年来の共演関係を築いてきたベテランたちとのカルテットで、ストーリー性のある楽曲を題材に、即興演奏の可能性を存分に表現。スタジオ3作目にして、自身の一つの到達点を示した。

ニューヨークを拠点とした活動では、Russ Lossing、Cameron Brown、Gerald Cleaver、Billy Mintz、Ben Monder、Todd Neufeld、Allan Mednard ら、コンテンポラリー／アヴァンギャルド・シーンをリードする音楽家たちとライブで共演を重ねた。

2020年に名門 Fresh Sound New Talent（Spain）から発表した『Dancer In Nirvana』は、アメリカ、イギリス、日本のジャズ専門メディアにおいて高い評価を受けている。2015年のデビューアルバム『Songs Unconscious-minded』では、Gilad Hekselman、Fabian Almazan、Linda Oh らと録音した。

日本でも複数のグループを主宰し、新宿ピットインをはじめ東京近郊のライブハウスを中心に活動。2014年以降はリーダーとして日本各地でツアーも行ってきた。約8年間に及ぶアメリカでの活動を経て、2025年春より再び日本に拠点を移し、現在は東京をベースに活動している。

また若い世代への教育活動にも力を注ぎ、母校である京都大学のビッグバンドおよびジャズ研究会では、定期的に指導を行っている。

Kazuki Yamanaka

Kazuki Yamanaka is a Japanese saxophonist and composer who has released three studio albums and one live Blu-ray album as a leader. His latest album, Humanity (Whirlwind Recordings, UK, 2026), recorded in New York City with pianist Russ Lossing, bassist Cameron Brown, and drummer Billy Mintz, marks a point in his work as a considered composer and improviser. His second album, Dancer in Nirvana (Fresh Sound New Talent, Spain, 2020), featuring Lossing, Brown, and drummer Gerald Cleaver, received favorable reviews from leading international jazz publications including Jazz Journal (UK), JazzTrail (US), and Jazz Japan.

During his years in New York City, Yamanaka led his own groups and collaborated with musicians such as Russ Lossing, Cameron Brown, Gerald Cleaver, Billy Mintz, Ben Monder, Todd Neufeld, and Allan Mednard. He appeared extensively at leading venues for improvised music in Brooklyn’s avant-garde scene, including iBeam, Shapeshifter Lab, and Scholes Street Studio.

Alongside his work in the United States, Yamanaka has maintained an active performing career in Japan since 2014, touring regularly and appearing at established jazz venues throughout the country, including Pit Inn (Tokyo), Sometime (Tokyo), Le Club Jazz (Kyoto), Mokkiriya (Kanazawa), and Lifetime (Shizuoka).

Born in Saitama, Japan, Yamanaka moved to New York in 2012 to study at the State University of New York at Purchase College, where he completed a master’s degree in music in 2014. Among the many musicians he studied with, both in and outside the school, Jon Gordon, Hal Galper, John Abercrombie, Jon Faddis, and Lee Konitz had a lasting influence on his musical development. In 2017, he participated in the School for Improvisational Music workshops directed by Ralph Alessi, which had a significant impact on Yamanaka’s musical direction.

In 2020, Yamanaka returned to Japan after several continuous years in New York, remaining active in Tokyo’s jazz scene while also touring periodically throughout the country. In 2023, he relocated to Philadelphia, where he spent a year further developing his musicianship and artistic vision and was selected as a teaching assistant at the Philadelphia Clef Club of Jazz. This period was followed by an eight-month return to New York City, during which he performed several times as a leader and recorded with longtime collaborators Russ Lossing, Cameron Brown, and Billy Mintz.

He returned to Japan in April 2025 and is currently based in Tokyo.
